Welcome to the Emoticon Gallery! - NaNoEmo by a-kid-at-heart

For years, many emoticonists on dA have been suggesting, trying, working, petitioning, polling and writing journals to get dA to organize the Emoticon Gallery in a simple and effective manner. While miscats such as photo packs have always been a nuisance, the implementation of Add Media has encouraged massive numbers of icon related works to flood our gallery. This makes finding emotes and the people who create them near impossible, and as a result the community which forms around those works is equally challenging to maintain.

Here you will find a simple gallery structure for you to submit or find emotes, and a friendly place to find emoticonists. :grouphug: by a-kid-at-heart

The rules here are simple:

Anyone can join :incognito: by a-kid-at-heart
Anyone can submit (emotes, obviously) by a-kid-at-heart
Submissions that do not fit the descriptions given for the folder it is placed in will be moved. If you are consistently careless we'll come after you... :irritated: by a-kid-at-heart relentlessly... it won't be pretty . :kinky: by a-kid-at-heart
Any questions asked or requests made in the comments below will be answered as quickly as possible Top Uses for a Tard - Stamp Licker by a-kid-at-heart
Any questions asked or requests made via notes will usually be answered quicker

This is your gallery, so feel free to offer suggestions or make requests and the Admin team will do what we can to improve things.

Kinda sad this group is even needed, but I love the idea! What happened to the emoticon community, though? It seems to have died down to such small numbers, or is that just me? I've missed a lot, apparently.

I think another factor was the fact the community was relying on around 5 active members to run all of the contests and the groups. When they were unable to devote as much time to dA (either by needing time off or needing to focus on offline life) no one else came forward to keep things going.

There were equally a couple of scenarios where a few people said some unkind things towards other members inside the community. It turned a people off making emotes to avoid the drama, and split the community apart. And as soon as the art started to dry up, the community just died off.

I think dA has also changed as a website. I am no longer passionate about the site and whilst I pop in daily, there's nothing here to keep me on the website for more than 5-10 mins. The groups platform is still unfinished and doesn't inspire me to keep working at it. The chats seem so unfriendly nowadays. There's few contests (because they receieve far less entries than they deserve) and I can count the number of recent projects on one hand.

Now it's just difficult to get anything moving. When people do try, they get no recognition or enthusiasm from the community, which is a real buzz-kill. You spend hours trying to start a new project, and get maybe 5 entries. That hardly inspires people to try. And as the community has dried up, very few people are joining. Without the newcomers, there's little new inspiration to pixel, as people aren't developing new themes, skills and techniques.

All in all, it's extremely sad to see a thriving community just about die out. But I've been hurt too many times in the past to want to put time and effort into getting things moving, and I think many people feel the same.

Very sad indeed. :(

Glad you like! BIG Smile

My best guess, Add Media wiped out the community. Seems counter intuitive, since it made our work accessible to anyone that wants to use it, but the flood gates for miscats opened wide and buried those of us still creating art (I don't consider ripping off an animation from another source "creating art", even if they had to resise it to be 50x50 pixels).

The gallery was a source of inspiration as much as contact, now it just drains me to go through it. A lot of the "older" emoticonists are still lurking. Most check in to see what if anything is happening, but without inspiration aren't likely to prioritize art before their rl activities. Many just don't have the time.

New blood as they say would pick up the slack and try their hand at emoting, but it's really hard to find them and get the feedback going. The interaction from the community is what encouraged new people to participate, and the work from experienced emoticonists gave them something to strive for. This group was the best I could come up with to help, but it still needs deviants to submit their art for it to work. I'm glad you joined! :tighthug:

I never would have expected that to happen in a million years. I guess one could have seen it coming, what with the plz accounts, memes and all that. But I see what you're saying, it's really difficult to stay up to date without a 'main hub' in a community that is based on so much interaction. If I were new here, I wouldn't even know how to begin to make emoticons! It's even harder to find a community with that convoluted mess of a gallery.

I really appreciate what you're building here and I'm more than willing to help patching up what's left!
